Major Tom was a member of the original Team Venture and a test pilot. He crashed the TVC-15 (what Rusty refers to as his father's flying metal failure) into the sea while on a test flight and was presumed dead.
He later returned in ghost form upon the disturbance of the crash site. He did not want to do much of anything other than stand around screaming in young boy adventurer's faces.
Major Tom's Ghost!!
Upon finding out that his wife had remarried to the Action Man and that he was dead, he was decapitated by Brock Samson. His ultimate fate is unknown as his head seemed to be undead and well upon reaching the sea floor.
[edit] Inspiration
The character Major Tom was inspired by the character created by David Bowie, so much so that his death scene was a near perfect recital of the song Space Oddity. As well as some line of the latter Bowie song Ashes to Ashes
